How can I execute an electronic handgun permit?

Upon submitting a NICS Check and after it has been approved, you will be able to go to the Firearms Permit Applications (FARS) section on the top menu link.

Select “Handgun Permit Execution” on the Main Menu page for FARS.

You will need the following information to start permit execution:

  • SBI Number of purchaser
  • Date of birth of purchaser

Select the appropriate options and click the continue button.

The system will search for any NICS Checks submitted for handgun(s) in the last 30 days by your dealership for the purchaser information entered and list the open permits.

NICS checks listed with a “?” will list the reason why it is not available.

After a NICS Check is selected, the system will check for all firearm applications in the system. Any active permit will have a radio button for selection. You will need to select one firearms permit to proceed. After entering the handgun information, you will be able to review all the information and make any edits if required. Submitting the review page will complete the permit execution process.

The system will send an email to the purchaser with a link to download the permit PDF. You will be able to access the executed permit from “Executed Permit Search” at any time. Permit PDF will be available from the respective permit’s Details page.

Why am I unable to execute a permit?

If a handgun permit has been executed for the purchaser in the last 30-days period by any seller in New Jersey, the system will not allow you to proceed. To execute another permit, the purchaser will need to wait for 30-days from the date of last permit execution as per N.J.S. 2C:58-3i or reapply for another permit. There are several exemptions listed in N.J.S. 2C:58-3i.

What is required to execute multiple permits?

For multiple permit execution, the purchaser will either need to be a law enforcement officer or have been approved for the multiple handgun exemption. If any of the two exemptions are selected, the system will allow the execution to proceed when a NICS Check and STS 033 application are approved for the same exemption.

Top

What is required to execute permit(s) for a law enforcement officer to another law enforcement officer?

There is no NICS requirement for this type of transfer. The purchaser must have applied and been approved as an active law enforcement officer. All information is to be entered electronically.
